Port of Tallinn signs MoU with US company Protio for e-fuel production in Muuga Harbor

US green metal and chemical producer Protio and Port of Tallinn have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore e-fuel production possibilities, which would involve Protio producing e-methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, and potentially e-NG in Muuga Harbor.

According to Valdo Kalm, Chairman of the Management Board of Port of Tallinn, the Memorandum of Understanding between Protio and Port of Tallinn is a very important step for the port in implementing the company's strategy to develop green energy in the industrial parks of Muuga and Paldiski South Harbor.

The production and storage of green energy is clearly a new business and growth area for Port of Tallinn. It also brings the port closer to achieving its sustainability goals."The transition to alternative fuels by ships reduces greenhouse gases (GHG), improves air quality, and helps protect the marine environment.

Port of Tallinn's goal is to achieve climate neutrality and zero emissions for ships at berth by 2050. Increasing the availability of alternative fuels will make shipping more environmentally friendly and reduce the carbon footprint of ports," said Kalm.Protio CEO Shaun Kizewski also expressed great pleasure over the joint project.

"We are excited to take this step with Port of Tallinn as it supports both companies' vision for a sustainable future. We believe that Muuga Harbor is strategically located at an important junction for both domestic and international trade, making it an ideal location for our green fuel production.

The port's favorable location increases its attractiveness to a wide range of international and regional customers seeking e-fuels as a solution for carbon reduction."
