In September, the hydrogen technology unit of AS Metrosert and Estonian startup H2Electro launched a three-year joint project within the framework of the Enterprise Estonia (EIS) Applied Research Program. The goal of the project is to further develop H2Electro’s co-electrolysis technology to valorize carbon dioxide (CO₂) into synthesis gas (syngas).

Power-to-X Solutions and SOEC Technology

Co-electrolysis and solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC), which are the focus of the project, make it possible to turn CO₂ into a valuable feedstock. The produced syngas is a key raw material for the industrial production of e-fuels, methanol, chemicals, and other Power-to-X solutions.

Semi-Industrial Testing and Methodology

Metrosert contributes to the development of SOEC technology with its semi-industrial testing center and test capabilities. During the joint project:

  • Existing testing technology and methodology will be upgraded.
  • A standardized approach will be developed for validating stack durability and the regeneration process.
  • Electrochemical characterization and long-term load tests will be conducted at both single-cell and six-cell short stack levels.

Through research and testing, the efficiency and reliability of the electrode and current collector solutions developed by H2Electro will be directly evaluated under real operating conditions.

Scaling and Science-Based Evidence

The project will result in validated datasets and scientific publications, providing independent proof of the technology’s reliability and creating a foundation for its future industrial scaling.

The development project is built on the shared ambition and conviction of both parties that competitive deep tech is born through close, trust-based collaboration.
